Chateau Lafleur Pomerol 2006
Lafleur is a 4.5-hectare estate sitting almost across the lane from Petrus, run by the Guinaudeau family. What makes it singular in Pomerol is the planting: the vineyard is planted roughly equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc (called Bouchet here) — the largest Cab Franc share of any Pomerol producer — on vines whose original Bouchet plant material was preserved through the 1956 frost (cut back to ground level rather than uprooted). The 2006 final blend is 61% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Franc. The 2006 is now approaching its peak window — kirsch and black cherry preserves on the nose, a savory note of melted tar and warm earth, medium to full-bodied with the firm but resolved tannins of nineteen years in bottle. From one of the great vintages of the early 2000s for the estate.
