Domaine A et P Villaine Mercurey Rouge Les Montots 2016
Aubert de Villaine is best known as the director of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, but his side hustle is far humbler: preserving and promoting the wines of the Cote Chalonnaise from his family domaine in Bouzeron. (He championed Aligote and got the Bouzeron AOC established in 1998.) Nephew Pierre de Benoist now runs the day-to-day, and the wines are farmed organically and biodynamically. Les Montots is a single-vineyard Mercurey from 50-year-old Pinot vines on clay and limestone, fermented with whole clusters in wood tanks (a method borrowed from DRC). The 2016 is structured and chewy now, with notes of ripe strawberry, raspberry, and cherry that should evolve toward underbrush and tobacco with age. Equal to many far more famous and expensive Burgundies.
